Exterior House Colours - Bold or Neutral?
I have been looking quite a bit at exterior house colours lately. When I say that I mean I have been looking around at what people have chosen as I am driving along or out walking but more than that I have been looking for inspiration for different paint colour choices.
I am not about to say go and paint your house purple but I do have a strong preference for dark house colours. A classic white or neutral house is great and will always look good but I find myself really noticing and admiring houses that are painted a dark colour and because I have loved this for so long, I really wonder if it will ever change for me.
I was scrolling through Pinterest looking at a collection of white and neutral houses and noticed I am always drawn to those with strong contrasting colours. So white with black windows or a dark door and trim. Perhaps it’s more about seeing contrast for me. I am not sure but I do like all of the houses below - all images from Pinterest.
So white is classic and you can’t go wrong with it. You can use a dark contrasting colour for trim, doors and windows to great effect and these things can be easy to change out as your tastes change.
I think however that when you don’t necessarily want to be the same as the other houses on your street or blend in as much, you can use a dark colour to great effect. Being drawn to older homes and traditional style this is a clear preference for me. I did a similar search on Pinterest for dark coloured homes and found these absolute beauties. Dark blue, dark green and black all look amazing on a house exterior. Add some timber or natural stone…..and ugh I’m dead. I just love it.
So I think the question is, if you had the chance to do any colour and material combination at all on your own home, what would you choose? Pretending that time, money and resources are no barrier whatsoever, what would you do?? I want to know because I think people do like dark houses but are a bit afraid to commit to it.
