Choosing The Perfect Window Treatment
Windows, we all have them (hopefully) and for those of us who live in the city, a home with limited privacy, or the desire to shut the light/heat/cold out at certain times, we need to have the option to cover them when we want to. From the inside, windows are also focal points that can significantly impact the vibe/look/feel and functionality of your room. When it comes to selecting window furnishings, the choices can seem overwhelming. From curtains to blinds to shades to shutters, each option offers its own set of benefits and considerations. Here we'll explore how to navigate the world of window treatments to find the perfect solution for your needs, your style and your home.
Consider Your Needs and Preferences:
Before diving into the huge number of options available to you, take some time to really consider your needs and preferences. Think about your need for privacy, light control, air flow, insulation, and aesthetics (I actually think this last need is really important, what you choose can really add to (or detract from) the look of your room). Do you prefer natural light to flood your space, or do you need blackout options for better sleep? Are you looking for treatments that offer energy efficiency, or are you more concerned about improving the look of your interiors? Understanding your priorities will help narrow down your options and guide your decision-making process. A big consideration (IMO) is whether you want to be able to have the window open and the window furnishing closed at the same time…if so, really think about what will be the best option here. Nothing worse than trying to sleep in summer with the breeze blowing through your window, and your blind banging against the window frame. In this case a curtain will work better as it can blow in the breeze, letting air in and not waking you up.
Explore Different Styles and Fabrics:
Window dressings come in a variety of styles, fabrics, and materials, each brining its own influence to the overall look and feel of your home. Curtains add softness and warmth to a room. They are the layer to the room that you didn’t know you needed. If you decide to be adventurous they can also bring colour and vibrancy to the room, lifting the whole look. Blinds offer a sleek and modern vibe. They are subtle and understated and can be perfect in a minimal looking space. Shades come in various materials like bamboo, fabric, or cellular, providing versatility and again different styles. Consider the architectural style of your home and the existing decor when making your choice to ensure a cohesive look. Personally I love a mix of neutral and colourful fabrics used as window treatments throughout a home. It really can bring so much to a space. Case in point the images below! Balance Form and Function:
When choosing window dressings, it's essential to strike a balance between form and function. While aesthetics are crucial (potentially I am biased to this point), functionality really is equally important. Go for treatments that not only enhance the beauty of your space but also have a practical purpose. For example, sheer curtains can filter light and provide privacy without blocking views, motorized blinds offer convenience and ease of use, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Shutters or vertical blinds allow you to also have light and privacy at the same time and then if you want full light and then full darkness, go for an option with blockout qualities, or the option to give you both (like sheer curtains with a block out lining). There is a bit to think about but if you start by highlighting what you want (light vs dark vs open vs closed etc) it will help lead you quickly to the options that work best for you.
Dont Be Afraid To Double Up:
Some times it can work to put two window treatments on the one window. For example a roman blind and curtains or a roller blind an curtains. This is a layered look that it beautiful and functional. It allows you to use either treatment option depending on what you want to do. For example, want light but privacy, pull the curtain across but leave the blind up. Want to keep the warmth in, pull the blind down and the curtains across. Want to keep the heat and light out, pull the blind down etc. Below are some examples again found on Pinterest of beautiful double ups.
Consider your Window Treatments Early:
THIS IS IMPORTANT: If you’re building or renovating, you really need to consider what you’re doing in terms of window treatments nice and early. You need to allow for how and where the window treatments will be installed. Do you want to conceal the top of the blind/curtain? If so a recessed track is perfect but needs to be done at the right time in the build. Do you want to have blinds or shutters that sit inside your window frame? If so the frames need to be deep enough to allow for this otherwise they will be sitting outside of the window from or in a box like frame on top of the window. Consult a professional early in your build process so they can work through all of this with you. You won’t regret it !
Take Measurements and Consider Installation:
Accurate measurements are essential when arranging window treatments to ensure a perfect fit and proper functionality. Generally speaking I think you should call in the professionals and have your curtains and blinds made to measure. It does cost a little more but ideally this is not something you are changing on a regular basis so the investment is worth it. If this is not an option though, measure the width and height of your windows, taking into account any obstructions such as window frames or handles. Think about how and where you want the blind/curtain to sit and factor in the necessary hardware for installation. Again if you're unsure about measurements or installation, I think its always worth consulting with a professional for their expert guidance.
Budget Wisely and Prioritize Quality:
This last item ties in to the point above….While it can be tempting to opt for budget-friendly window treatments, investing in quality options will pay off in the long run. Quality materials and craftsmanship ensure durability, functionality, and long-lasting beauty. Evaluate your budget and prioritize spending on key areas where quality matters most, such as blackout curtains for bedrooms or insulated blinds for energy efficiency. Keep in mind that window dressings are an investment in your home's comfort and aesthetics, so choose wisely.
So selecting the perfect window dressings for your home isn’t rocket science but it is a thoughtful process that needs consideration of your needs, style preferences, and budget. If you think about these things as you head off on your window furnishing journey you’ll make the right decisions. If there is one thing I will stress, it is if you’re renovating or building, think about the window furnishings early. People are often doing it too late in the process….and if you need some inspiration, here are some images of window furnishings I love and I hope you do too.
