Embracing Style, Comfort AND Function: My Current Design Loves

In the ever-evolving landscape of interior design, there are moments when certain elements capture your attention. For me, when I notice these elements or items, they are almost always from past, often reinvented in a fun way. Right now, there are three design wonders that have me absolutely smitten. Join me on a little trip where we discuss chic seating, bold color theories, and innovative lighting as I share my current design obsessions: the armless corner sofa, the unexpected red theory, and cordless lamps.

  • The Armless Corner Sofa: A Symphony of Style and Comfort

If there's one piece of furniture that's stealing the spotlight in any living room (IMO), it's the armless corner sofa. Its design effortlessly combines style with practicality and when you add a ruffled skirt…..it reaches a new peak for me. This type of corner sofa can be done a few ways. Armless, with low arms and deep seats, or armless with more of a narrower seat to fit into a small sun room or nook. The absence of arms or having very low slim arms not only opens up the space, it invites you in and makes it feel more airy and expansive. No arms is also a little bit unexpected..and I like that. The fabric you then choose to cover it in and other design details (like the frill skirt) can then change the look of the sofa more. A skirt will obviously make it more traditional, as will a floral fabric. No skirt and a plain colour will make it feel more modern. This versatile seating solution becomes the focal point of any room, adapting seamlessly to various design styles. I love all of the examples below - all found on Pinterest from a range of designers including Whitney McGregor, Steven Handleman and Greg Warner.

Its space-saving elegance and adaptability make it a go-to choice for those who crave a harmonious blend of form and function. Whether you're hosting a gathering or enjoying a quiet evening, the armless corner sofa promises both style and comfort in equal measure.

  • The Unexpected Red Theory: Infusing Passionate Vibes into Design

Its so funny the the way things pop up and then after reading about them once, you start to see it everywhere. This is one of those things. Red has always been a color that commands attention, but the unexpected red theory takes it to a whole new level of intrigue. From vibrant accents to daring statements, the concept is that by incorporating shades of red into a room, it instantly makes it look better. The unexpected red theory adds a layer of mystery and maybe even passion, sparking conversations and lending an element of surprise to any space. Whether it's a bold red accent wall or subtle pops of crimson in home accessories like lamps or furniture like a painted red desk chair, the unexpected red theory has become a dynamic tool for self-expression, creating an atmosphere that's both inviting and fun. See some of the images below I found on House and Garden UK and from the designer Ben Pentreath.

  • Cordless Lamps: Illuminating Freedom in Design

The range of nice cordless lamps that I have now found available in Australia has never been so good. We can finally say goodbye to the constraints of powerpoint and ugly visible and tangled cords. Cordless lamps are revolutionizing the way we light up our spaces and where we can place our lamps. My discoveries are not for large table lamps, but rather small (but mighty) accent lamps that you can put anywhere inside. Want a lamp on your coffee table? No worries. Have a sofa table but no where to plug a lamp into? This will sort it. These innovative lighting solutions offer the ultimate flexibility, allowing you to place them wherever you please without being confined by the limitations of powerpoint.
The cordless lamps I’ve found come in a couple of styles (great for different style aesthetics) but are mostly on the smaller side. From sleek and modern to vintage-inspired, these lamps bring both functionality and style to any room. Whether I'm creating a cozy reading nook or enhancing the ambiance during a dinner party, cordless lamps have become my go-to lighting solution, adding a touch of modern convenience to my design repertoire. See below for two of my favourites from Soffle Lights and Mantar. You can have a look at the range from Soffle and Mantar online, both definitely worth a look.

So while the world of design will always evolve…and cycle back to designs from our past, these three design elements - the armless corner sofa, the unexpected red theory, and cordless lamps - have my attention right now. Whether you're looking to redefine your seating, dabble with bold colors, or embrace the freedom of cordless lighting, my three current design obsessions might just be the inspiration you need to elevate the look of your home. AND if you’re still feeling a little bit lost and not sure what to do or where to start with your home, let me know, I’m always here to help.
