Designing A Home That Is Uniquely Yours
If you have been reading along here for a little bit you will have heard me say more than once that I believe your home is more than just a place to live. It’s a reflection of who you are. Every piece of furniture, every colour on the wall, and every decorative detail should tell a story about your personality, style, and values. But how do you create a space that truly feels like you and is also beautiful? If you’re a bit stuck working this out, this blog post is for you.
Here’s how we approach designing personalized interiors that celebrate individuality and elevate your home.
1. Discovering Your Style
The first step in creating a space that feels uniquely yours is understanding your personal style. Do you lean toward modern minimalism, boho chic, timeless traditional, or something entirely different and quirky?
At the start of every project, we work closely with clients to uncover their preferences, often using inspiration boards, Pinterest saves, or even a favourite piece of art, clothing or fabric as a starting point. Your style doesn’t have to fit into one category—often, the most interesting spaces blend influences to create something completely original. There may be an overarching style but it is the injections of individuality that can make all the difference.
My suggestion is to create a Pinterest board or digital file and collect images of things you love. These can be images of interiors and exteriors, furniture items, gardens, colours used in interesting ways, whatever floats your boat. You will find that once you have a collection going, you can look back on it and see common elements that appeal to you. This helps immensely in working out what it is that you love.
2. Incorporating Meaningful Elements
A truly personal space is one that tells a story. Incorporating items with sentimental value, like family heirlooms, travel souvenirs, or personal collections, can make your home feel uniquely yours.
For example, we might design a gallery wall that highlights your favourite photographs or curate a bookshelf to display treasures collected from your adventures. You might have a piece of furniture that a family member has left to you or textiles you have purchased in your travels that you really love. These items should be called out and included in places throughout your home that are special. In some instances we start with these pieces and build a room around them. This approach can infuse your space with personality and make it feel one-of-a-kind.
3. Choosing Colours That Speak to You
Colour has a profound impact on how we feel in a space. Whether you gravitate toward calming neutrals, bold jewel tones, or earthy shades, the right colour palette can bring your personality to life.
We help clients explore colours that resonate with them, often pulling inspiration from their wardrobe, favourite artwork, or even the natural surroundings of their home. The goal is to create an environment where you feel comfortable and inspired every day.
We love colour here and will be using it much more in 2025. Colour (and paint specifically) can really change a room for the better, brining a whole new vibe for not a huge cost.
4. Balancing Function and Style
While aesthetics are essential, your home also needs to suit your lifestyle. Do you love hosting dinner parties, or is your space more about quiet evenings with family? Are you working from home and need a functional yet stylish office? Understanding how you live in your space allows us to design layouts and choose furnishings that enhance both form and function.
We believe a truly personalized home is one where every piece serves a purpose—whether that’s practicality, beauty, or both.
5. Mixing Old and New
My absolute favourite thing is to mix old with new (I wrote about it here). A unique space often strikes a balance between the past and present. Blending vintage or antique elements with contemporary pieces creates depth and character.
For one client, we paired a sleek, modern sofa with a hand-me-down sofa table that had been in their family for generations. The result? A harmonious blend of old and new that felt deeply personal and timeless.
6. Custom Details Make All the Difference
Sometimes, the best way to reflect your personality is through custom design. From bespoke furniture and tailored window treatments to personalized joinery or custom artwork, these details ensure your home is unlike any other.
Our team specializes in crafting custom solutions that fit your space and style perfectly. Whether it’s a built-in shelving unit designed for your book collection or a piece of custom furniture upholstered in a vintage fabric, these details make your home truly unique.
7. Don’t Be Afraid to Evolve
Your home should grow and change as you do. Incorporating flexible design elements—like modular furniture or decor that can be swapped out seasonally—allows your space to evolve with your tastes and needs.
We encourage clients to embrace change and experiment with new ideas, ensuring their home continues to reflect who they are over time.
